01/06/06 - Not a good day for GNER

by Fentyke @ 02/06/2006 - 18:28:11

Yesterdays journies started badly for me a finished in much the same way.

Arrived in good time for the 07.20 and parked the Scooter. As I'm taking the lid off I hear the dreaded announcement 'GNE|R would like to appolgise to passengers waiting for the 07.20 for London Kings Cross. Unfortunately this service has been delayed in the Thirsk area due to signal failure and is running aproximately 20 minutes late'.

I take it all in my stride. Been here before and I'll be there again.

However I didn't catch my usual 17.20 home. As mentioned in my previous post I met the missus at Kings Cross and as we were going to see the Editors at Brixton Academy. I arrived 10 minutes early and so looked at the arrivals board to check 1 her tain wasn't in and 2. It wasn't late. Needless to say it was running 18 minutes late as was every other GNER train due in to Kings Cross. What else could I do? I went for a pint.

20 minutes later I'm 3/4 of the way down my pint chatting to a mate of mine I've met while commuting. All the time we've been talking I've been checking the arrivals board so I don't miss her in doors. it's still running 18 minutes late. 5 minutes before the 18 minutes are up I glance at the screen and it's showing as arrived. Bastards have done me a gain. Lukily I find her quite easily.

After the gig we made it back to Kings Cross for 11pm and walked onto the last north bound GNER train - the 23.30 to Newcastle I think. Had a good long chat with a fellow commuter from Granthem who'd been out on the beers after work. Talked a lot about what it's like to be a commuter and GNER and where they're good and bad etc.

As we talked I couldn't help noticing that on the entire journey we slowed to I'd say somewhere under 50mph on 3 occasions, stopped completely twice and ended up 15 minutes late.

So. All in all I'd say GNER didn't have a very good day at all. It may or may not have been their fault, I don't know. Either way, I'm Glad I don't work for them.
