GNER's damp string is dead again.

by Penfold @ 23/07/2007 - 12:02:53

from nationalrail.co.uk:

"Train services in the Huntingdon area are being disrupted due to overhead wire problems.

"First Capital Connect will operate a replacement bus service between Peterborough and Huntingdon.

"GNER are operating an hourly shuttle diesel train service between Peterborough and Stevenage calling at Huntingdon."

Bollocks.

Of course, all GNER can say on THEIR site is: "GNER services in the Peterborough area are disrupted at present due damage to overhead power lines. GNER services will be subject to late notice cancellation and alteration. GNER wishes to apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause."

Pull your bloody fingers out, GNER, for Pete's sake.

Left Kings Cross on the 0730 this morning, got as far as Stevenage where it started to unravel. The info from the GNER staff was poor. 2 annoucements in 40 mins claiming we were waiting for information from GNER control. It was the FCC platform staff who had the decency to inform that the service was shut down. However this wasn't until 2 Huntingdon services had left. The 'ordered buses' promised would predictably not turn up for many hours, so decided to travel via Cambridge and Ely. Arrived at Peterborough at 1100. The saddest thing was the disjointed way the railway handled the problem. I noticed the Hull train service into London was diverted via Cambridge, so why not the service that was behind my GNER and perhaps picking up a few people? Why not stop the Cambridge fast services at Stevenage, so I could've got an earlier train from Cambridge! Why not run a fast stevenage, Huntingdon service?

The info from GNER was poor and sadly the train staff on the 0730 failed. The only 'saving light' for GNER was the staff were out inforce at Peterborough.

Sadly for me, I'm working nights, so just about to travel back into London after 6 hours sleep.....

Once again GNER decided that letting people know what is going on is not much of a priority. We recently had a staff satisfaction survey, I for one noted this, I bet they don't pay much attetion.

Some Kings Cross guards like myself "sign" Cambridge, which basically means that we have learnt the route and can take trains round there, however none of our drivers do which means that they can't. The reason Hull trains can use Cambridge is because their Drivers and Guards have learnt the route, which once again has proven very useful.

I arrived for the 0700 out of Peterborough yesterday. Just as we were due to depart the guard came on saying "lines down between Peterborough and Huntingdon, will update you as and when we get news".

Last time this happened I got off and went straight home to work there. Yesterday I thought I'd sit on the train for a bit and see what happens, with a view to getting off at 0730 if nothing was doing.

Then without warning at 0720 the doors closed and the train pulled out. 10 minutes later and it comes to a standstill somewhere north of Huntingdon. Why? Because the lines are down.

WHY DID THAT TRAIN EVER LEAVE PETERBOROUGH?

We then sat there, the guard announcing "I don't have any news" every now and then. Eventually she said that the train would reverse and, depending on the decision of the signallers, would either proceed to London or go back to Peterborough.

After an age the train began reversing, again the guard came on the PA and said she didn't know if we were going back to Peterborough, or just reversing up to the crossover point, because she "couldn't contact the driver". I wondered if the gravity of the situation had caused her to temporarily lose the use of her legs.

Eventually, 100 minutes after it should have left Peterborough, the train limped back into the station, where it terminated.

No idea who was responsible for all this, but it reinforces the notion that Frank Spencer is running the railways.

Outside the station "Mr. Enthusiastic" was directing traffic and seemed to be in his element. He needs to pull his trousers up though.

A damaged insulator from the overheads smashed the cab window of the 0653 Peterborough Kings Cross FCC (nasty shock for the driver I imagine), not sure how it had been dislodged, went via Ely on the 0751 service and arrived at Kings Cross at 1010. saw no familiar faces doing the same route.

The 1730 was very quiet last night, 1750 was cancelled.

Glad I was in Dublin. Flights we're on time and everything went smoothly. Even Made P'boro Stanstead in less than an hour both ways and if you know the A14, that's some achievement.

I was talking to one of the staff at Peterborough and they told me that the 07.00 will leave but as it is an HST its going to exam the line to see if its clear for it to carry onto London.
Then they said FCC was turning at Huntingdon so i drove there.

I had a First Class single ticket from Peterborough to Kings Cross for Mon, which I bought on Fri. Arrived at 7am to be told lines down. Past experience has told me to avoid GNER when lines are down. I got a Central Train to Leicester and a train to St Pancras from there. Arrived into London almost 2 hrs after the 07:20 should have arrived.
