Disabled passengers

This morning whilst alighting the 07.20, the platform was blocked by a throng of people and I couldn't work out why. It wasn't until I got a little further down the platform did I realsie that the cause of the blockage was due to crew helping a Wheelchair passenger off the train. The fact that half the platform has been fenced off due to the renovations didn't help matters either.

Anyway that got me thinking what a hassle it is for disabled passengers to travel on trains and wondered what others thought. We also had a timely comment posted earlier requesting a post on disabled passengers so here it is.

The Rail authority does work to a a code of practice and all stations have been assessed and a Acess Audit carried out with reccomendations carried given in accordance with the SRA code of practice

it is all in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act 2005

GNER and other TOC's will have a plan if you care to delve further, and there are many interested user groups and forums eho are involved in consultation that is ongoing.

I had to travel from Peterborough to Manchester after being discharged from hospital and unable to carry my luggage. The member of staff assigned to help me at Peterborough left me while he went to start a train, and then forgot to come back; when I got to Manchester there was no-one to assist me off the train, I had to ask another passenger to help, and when I finally found a member of staff on the platform she radioed in and I wasn't even on the list! I wasn't happy...

I am glad the issue of disabled passengers has been brought up. For the sake of brevity lets abbreviate this to Cripples. In my opinion far to much resource is spent on cripples given the number that actually use the service. We now only have one toilet so the bastards can get the chairs in and out when the rest of us are breaking our necks for a piss. Why should 300 able bodied passengers be dealyed for one smelly Cripple?

And another thing so few of them travel so why not have a small dedicated cripple express each day? An old box car should do it and frankly it will make life easier for everyone.

For your sake Razor, I hope you're not serious. That sort of behaviour should get you banned imho. Not because of pc but because you are clearly out of order! Think about what would happen if you were in their position and there was no way for you to go and see your family. It's the train company's responsability to ensure these trains run on time, not the passengers, so they need to make sure that disabled passengers are looked after. Show some compassion.

  ...Well of course I am serious. Show normal travelling passngers some consideration and get rid of the crippled toilets. They sell booze on the train so why not provide adequate toilet facilities.
  
  And there is another thing? Why sell booze to the cripples they will only get legless.
  
  They have their own wheelchairs I say give them their own trains.

Look i travel with these (abbreviate) cripples every morning making the train 10 mins late when i need that 10 mins to get to my final destination. MONEY!!!!! i cant afford not to be on that cat every morning at 9.00 am other wise i would be in prison on having inbred sex with my brother.

Of course he's not serious Detective. This is what Ron does and he does it very well. If there's one thing I can rely on with this blog it's Ron to add some outrageous and/or contravertial comments. If you don't like what he posts or and lets face it, not many do) just take it with a pinch of salt and move on. Goad him and he'll get worse.

Thank you for posting this thread. I assume Razors comments are in jest as reading between the lines he attempts humour but fails. If you have to spend time in a wheelchair then you would know the problem. as for getting legless well given the opportunity then I would!

Now I would like to see special trains for Cripples. Not just a space in the corner but purpose built Cripple Carriages designed for me to access with my wheelchair and in an easy manner.

I would like better shelfs in the toilets to enable my medication to be taken without the worry of the Cocaine being blown all over the place as the train rocks from side to side.

Finally I would like special recognition for the Ten Meter high club. Thats right a certificate for having sex at ten meters high in an inter city 125!

If Airlines can do it then so can I!

I had one of those electric buggys that OAP's use in the luggage van once, so I decided to take it on a test drive along the lenth of the carriage as we did 125MPH between Newark and Doncaster. The bleedin' thing took off, causing me to crash into the train office wall, and causing me whiplash.

Bloody death traps those buggys. Hope the old dear didn't notice the scratched paintwork on the nearside when it was offloaded at Darlington?

What annoys me is the attitude of station and train staff, I travel by bicycle, my friend by wheelchair, I don't mind being asked "Have I booked", for my bike to be put in carriage P, but when the same comment is asked of a my friend, sat in her wheelchair on the platform, waiting to board (at the correct part of the platform) to be asked "Have I booked", well Yes, I have, but! Does it matter? "Oh, Well I'll have to find someone", Come on people Disability Discrimination Act!

Get her on the train, on lets get moving, it shouldn't take 2 platform staff and 1 train staff asking "Did you book?" in a patronising voice!

  Yes ok when you get to the train we will shove you on and not asked if you have booked, then when you discover that both disabled spaces are occupied what then? You go shouting and screaming about not been a space and how you have to park in the vestibule and how you want compensationa and contacting every paper and lawyer and compensation company in the uk about lack of D.D.A law that applies to you and generally spouting more crap than Razor ever knew how to.
  
  Simplest solution book you in make sure your friend has adequate assistance on to the train a comfortable journey and assiatnce to help them off.

One reason for the Have you booked question, so that the station staff can ring the train staff (admittedly they don't always do) and ask us if the disabled passenger seat area is free of other wheelchair/disabled people who joined at other stations, or of all the luggage that people seem to put there because they have no space for it( which if they actually got to the train station 10-15 minutes before their train, instead of the usual 30 seconds they could ask the station staff where they can put their luggage in the DVT/TGS (luggage vans))

The main reason wheelchair passengers are asked if they have booked (and in theory thier reservation checked) is to ensure the person who has gone to the trouble to reserve themselves onto the train is the person who occupies the wheelchair space. Most disabled people do realise that space is limited and are happy to have thier reservation checked.

This is pathetic.CYCLING TECH, There are 2 spaces for wheelchair users on our services. Tell you what, next time, rather than having 2 staff members on hand to put down the rather awkward and heavy ramp, we'll leave it to you and your friend to do between you while also trying to put your bike in the DVT. Then when you get onboard and realise that BOTH spaces are occupied by wheelchair users, we'll close the doors and despatch the train before you find your chance to put the ramp back, get yourselves off the train and remove your bike from the DVT. Sound like a plan?????
