The only decent thing GNER did for commuters in my eyes was to introduce the 06.10 Peterborough to Kings Cross service, in the 2 years that GNER ran this service I only every remember 2 cancellations. NXEC have been running the franchise for just 3 months and the number of cancellations of this train is now already in double figures (yes it was cancelled again this morning!!). Are NXEC just unlucky? or do they just not give a shit about commuters and cancel the 06.10 at the first oppurtunity?

See... how much of this information do you proactively go looking for?
Surely you dont need to be led by the hand? I dont know what job you do for NX of the EC but please, take off the rose tinted spectacles of GNER. Yes they were a good company. They had their faults too! National Express is just new to the ECML. And what people seem to be suffering from is better the devil you know... As in the shining ray of light that was GNER.
NXEC are here to stay... Remember this, they pay your wages... Admittedly through the money it recieves from passengers. If you don't like it... i am sure www.jobcentreplus.co.uk can help you.
Also, lots of the delays that NXEC have suffered have either been NR on TOC (OHL, signalling etc) TOC on TOC (GC, HT, XC or other TOC).. Not many are actually TOC on themselves...

I agree platform the 0610 was a great idea for getting commuters in early but also good for staff also.
Good for staff and commuters who have had the fun of travelling for 90 minutes on a freezing cold FCC train.
I have to agree with Mad Sonia in can be annoying when you read in the Times whats happening in your company, or worse when they know before you do.
I don't think though that the trains are as bad as Great Western, i know about delays and cancelleations, and yes there can be overcrowding but is it as bad? -

Did you know I can fly business class with British Airways to Rome from Stanstead for £250 return?
How on earth do the train companies get away with their charging? -
- 18/03/2008 @ 00:06:31
Yeah but why would you wanna go to Rome when you can travel in economy to Newcastle for £248, much more of a tempting offer.
I agree that train prices are becoming ridiculous, the only tickets that are becoming affordable to people is advance tickets.
And to be honest if it was not for companies paying, thats all you would see.
thats how they make their money-
- 18/03/2008 @ 08:12:28
I suppose the awnser is competition really. There are six airlines all competing for the same customers, each trying to better the others deal.
Obviously with the train operators they hold a monopoly and people have little choice other then to use the service.
It might make sense to have several comapnies running trains on the same track.
If network rail continued to manage the line then ot would provide some interesting competition.
Look at Hull trains for example. compared with NXEC they are excellent and the service is cheaper.-
- 18/03/2008 @ 23:07:21
You would be suprised at the actual difference, seeing a lot of tickets the price to Doncaster on Hull Trains is a whacking great difference our Standard open is £164 return there's is probably a quarter of that, same as Grand Central about 30 something pounds to York, Ours are £99.50
Network Rail do manage the line, well actually they own the line and everything else including the stations, all we manage are the trains, which are also leased.
Another reason is the billions these train companies promise to pay back to the government within their franchise agreement, so, a good way to get revenue is t hike up prices, although they have to share the price of a ticket with other ATOCS, still puts money in the kitty.
Another reason that trains are saturated with affordable tickets as all the money goes to that particular company and does not have to be shared out.
Probably why the government will never renationalise the railways-
- 19/03/2008 @ 09:19:44
I see what you mean.
Its almost another form of indirect taxation by the government.

The Evening Standard tonight has a really good article on falling standards on NXEC services:
http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23457587

The only thing we passengers can do apart from not using NXEC trains is to complain to the Department of Transport. Passengers in the West Country did this and with the threat of the rail franchise being removed because of poor service First (aka Worst) Great Western did get their act together. There is no point us moaning and ranting to each other - the railway companies are just not interested unless their profits are put at risk.
