Well, At least they're consitant.

by Fentyke @ 16/07/2008 - 09:07:41

What is it NXEC have against the 07.17? In order or regularity, on any one day you can be sure that one or more of the following will affect this service: -

1. Its a 125 set one day, a 225 for the next 2 and then back to a 125 for the next 2. Either way we never know what type of train is going to arrive and are consequently unsure where to stand on the platform or where seat reservations are. In addition and as mentioned in earlier posts, the unrefurbed 125 coaches are a fucking disgrace. £5500 to sit on a 30 year old seat that's had every substance known to man spilt on it at some point in it's life. Fuck of NXEC. You should be paying us to sit in that squalor and your staff should be on double time to work in it.

2. No seat reservations. OK this affects nearly every service but it's still bloody frustrating.

3. It's late. Goes without saying really and I think you can guess how frustrating this problem is.

4. There's a coach missing (Usually C or D) which again means we have no idea where our seat reservations have been moved too. At least we haven't until we're pulling out of the station and they finally get round to telling us at the end of the welcome aboard crap. Why they can't tell us while we're stood on the platform is beyond me.

5. It arrives well early. Not such a problem at all and no complaints from me if it arrives early. I especially love to watch the people who panic and leg it thiniing that they'd better run because if it arrives early, it will leave early. Eh, no it won't it will leave at 07.17 so stop panicing, stop running and stressing etc and take your time.

6. Either the train is back to front or one or more of the coaches are. Staff must get a bit of a laugh watching passengers sqeeze past each other through the aisle as they traverse the opposite end of the coach were their seat no resides. I do.

7. It often arrives early into Kings Cross even if it arrived into Peterborough late. Again, no complaints from me for arriving early however it does highlight just how much time NXEC have built into the time table to help them meet targets.

All in all there is no consistancy with this service at all. Don't get me wrong it's not THAT bad a service as it is usually on time at both ends. However, as a commuter we never know what to expect which many find frustrating. Not me mind as I've got to the point where I find most of the so called 'problems' minor and it sometimes makes me chuckle listening and watching other passengers moan like buggary. I've also invented a little game to brighten up the morning where you have to guess what will be wrong with it each day. You get 1 point for everything you guess right and lose half a point for everything you got wrong. At the end of the week you tot up the score and see who'se won. Seeing as I'm the only one playing, I win most weeks.

Seat reservations - according to NXEC themselves, if your seat reservation is not available AND you're unable to find a seat, the guard must find you a seat - including trying First. If they can't you can claim the cost of your journey back.

Anyway, don't understand why you all try and squeeze on those old MkIII's when First Capital Connect run the semi-fast peak services.

Eh that would be becasue they're semi fast as opposed to fast.

I must admit I was not aware that NXEC HAD to find you a seat if your reservation is not where it's supposed to be, if at all. Are there any Staff who can confirm this?

May have put the cart before the horse, the refund scheme starts next year but does exist.

I took the 10.36 from Grantham yesterday which again was one of the very old dilapidated trains, a fucking disgrace.

Anyway As it was hot and the service was packed I paid my £74 for a first class single. (Cheaper to fly Ryan Air to Sardinia)

The train arrived at Stevenage where we had to pick up the passengers from an earlier failed London bound NXEC train.

It was not a pleasant expereince for anyone.

You just don't understand do you Ronnie, me old long suffering commuter mate!
I travel on NXEC regularly, though luckily I don't have to work in London town every day now, as I decided to take a salary cut and work near where I live. (You may want to try that, then you could complain to the Government every time you get delayed on the road by buses, red lights, slower car drivers, accidents and the sheer volume of traffic)
Anyway, in order for National Express to get you a nice clean train that has plenty of space so you can no doubt book a seat for your coat and laptop, and sod the other passengers, they have to take a train out of service to re-furbish it. That's the reason why they have to get "very old dilapidated trains" on short term hire to maintain some kind of service to try and keep whinging fuckers like you happy!
So why not chill out, pay your seventy quid to Ryan Air and fuck off to Sardinia, and leave an extra few seats available for the Stevenage passengers!

What patronising bollocks. I'm sure most commuters would love to work nearer home (I know I would) but I'd hope most reasonable people would realise this isn't always possible.
The squalid coaches reffered too on here are not the coaches leased from Midland Mainline. They are in fact the very old GNER stock which are far worse than the MM rolling stock. The fact of the matter is, NXEC and GNER before them have been refurbing old 125 stock for months and months and months but from our perspective, progress seems painfully slow. They have made a big song and dance about how they're refurbing the fleet so don't blame us if we moan when they fail yet again to deliver on their promises to customers.

I don't like paying £1000's to sit in such squallor and I can't imagine casual passengers like spending £100's to sit in the same shit either. I think my 7 year old would realise that rolling stock must be withdrawn from service to be refurbed but thanks for pointing out the bloody obvious anyway.

I can understand why you want to work from home and not London. Most losers do really. They cant stand the pace and cant keep up with the competition.

I suggest you try counselling to deal with the failure syndrome.

Most losers dont complain about things.and Clearly you dont liek complaining. You prefer to accept the shit thats dished out to you daily.

I suspect you have not very well in life?

Your idea of treating the wife is a Vindaloo in a flock papered resturant in steveange! I bet she loves your curry breath.

When did she last make love to you?

Ha! I thought so. Twenty years is a long time old man.

Cant stand the pace in London and your living like a loser.

Sad but good luck old bean!!

NXEC are already 1 HST down due to a defect PLUS they're "loaning" a HST set to Arriva Xcountry for the weekend service down to the West Country.

Oh and I read that DfT have said that NXEC must also give another HST set to East Midlands Trains later this year (probably their ex-MML stock back).

I agree with you Fen - it's a shambles. But that's what you get from the structure in place.

The good news is the ECML will benefit from the new intercity trains first PLUS there are rumours that FCC will be getting some of those new "Javelin" trains (although most people in the "know" claim it's a load of bollocks.

Nice to see a factual comment posted Central Simon, and as for my previous posting, why it should be called "Patronising Bollocks" when in fact it's a factual solution is beyond me? If the daily commute is too stressful, the answer is surely to stop doing it, I realise that is a very simplistic outlook but it worked for me. Unfortunately the downside is the salary drop, upside is no regular commute!
This is supposed to be a blog about experiences of an East Coast commuter, how about posting some positve, funny, or positively wierd experiences. We've all had them! Not every journey can be shit from start to finish, yes you pay £1000's a year (works out around £26.00 a return journey, based on 40 weeks usage I think) and it may seem that any rail company has you over a barrel. Two years ago when I stopped travelling everyday, GNER were paying Railtrack sixteen million a month for track access, plus the cost of hiring the rolling stock from the leasing company. I would guess NXEC are paying a lot more now.
So you see that since privitisation every one is getting screwed by the government, as that,s who NXEC pay for the franchise (as any 7 year old can tell you, apologies to Fentyke!)
NXEC are bad, GNER were bad, BR was fucking terrible, I know I used to commute when everything was painted BR blue, and trains then were really dirty. I was probably commuting when the majority of you were still at school (apologies again Fentyke, if that sound's patronising, but I don't see many of the 'old boys' when I travel now!)
Hopefully new trains will be along in the next 3 - 4 years, but I'm not holding my breath. So in the meantime, I'll just throw my copy of Metro and my paper coffee cup in the waste bin and not leave it on the table like a lot of people, sos the next pick up of passengers can moan about how dirty NXEC send the trains out.

Well you be a good boy and toss in the bin like you said.

You sound like an old tosser.

Blogs like this are useful for letting people know how you feel and sometimes joining people together in action.

Sounds like you have been around a long time you old fart.

Oh Razor Ronnie, you poor boy!

You have my sincere sympathhy my old 'deep in debt, have to work in London' chappie.

What on earth are you doing leaving two comments over the weekend when your not even doing your rat race commuting bit? You should have been out and about with your wife and family enjoying the summer sunshine, not seething away in front of your company laptop thinking of retorts to my comments. How really sad your days off have become my friend, though that probably sums up your life in general.

Really is time you de-stressed and probably took the little lady out for a meal (lots of gentlemen who don't spend 12 hours or more away from home each day stuck on NXEC trains, may just be beating you too it; if you catch my drift!!!)

I can recommend a nice Indian she may enjoy, the only flock in there is on the walls, unlike the flock of sheep you join on your daily grind to earn a stressed out crust so you can impress your friends, though I somehow doubt you have any due to your highly strung, heart fit to burst lifestyle.

Hope you have a really nice commute this week, and woe betide NXEC if they dare to arrive 10 seconds late, cos big, bad, commuter spokesperson Ronnie will be on the case!

I may have been around a few years you young pup, but the way you live your sad, agressive, mega stressed out life should ensure that you'll never catch me up in years.

Just remember to keep the coach clean for the Stevanage boys, okay. There's a good little boy!

well i gotta say that is the best put down that i have read in a long while, shows that you dont need swearing and ranting and raving to get a point across shows a good bit of intelligence

Agreed it's a practical solution but only if there's a job local to where you live that fits your skill set. Believe me, my options are limited. Consequently I'm stuck with the train or the 'not an option' car to get to work.

I'd love to and sometimes do blog the lighter side of commuting but the fact of the matter is, the highlights are few and far between.
